Tonight’s the night that Grease is the word! The highly anticipated Grease: Live airs this evening on Fox, and the cast is wrapping up several months of rehearsal (and braving a rainy L.A. forecast) prior to tonight’s show. We’ve paid a visit to the set, gone on a date with Danny Zuko (that would be Aaron Tveit), and nabbed some behind-the-scenes photos and info. Before you settle in for a night of burgers and root beer floats, check out your go-to guide of everything you need to know!
Where to Watch: Fox at 7 P.M. ET. If you don’t have access to a TV, you can stream the live musical in select cities (click here to view).
A Refresher Course: Here’s how Fox is setting up the premise for the live musical: “The beginning of senior year means the end of Danny and Sandy’s summer romance—until Sandy unexpectedly transfers to Danny’s high school. Can Danny maintain his bad-boy image as the coolest member of the T-Birds, once he and Sandy start going together, and can Sandy remain a good girl after she joins the Pink Ladies? With their friends Rizzo and Kenickie pulling them in different directions, it’s up to Danny and Sandy to stay hopelessly devoted as they make their way from Rydell High to a new frontier.”
Starring: The Paramount Television Production stars Julianne Hough as Sandy, Aaron Tveit as Danny Zuko, Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, Kether Donohue as Jan, Keke Palmer as Marty, Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchy, original cast member Didi Conn as Vi, Mario Lopez as Vince Fontaine, Carlos PenaVega as Kenickie, David Del Rio as Putzie, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer as Cha-Cha, Elle McLemore as Patty Simcox, Jordan Fisher as Doody, Wendell Pierce as Coach Calhoun, Ana Gasteyer as Principal McGee, Andrew Call as Sonny, and more.
Special Musical Performances by: Jessie J singing “Grease Is the Word”; Boyz II Men singing “Beauty School Dropout”
Sing Along to the Songs: Fox is providing a handy booklet with all the lyrics to each song featured in the musical. Click here in case you’re not quite an expert on “Summer Lovin’.”
Grease History: Grease: Live is based on the original 1971 musical Grease, by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey and Paramount Pictures’ 1978 feature adaptation. The film, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie musical ever.
There were 52 days of rehearsal, going back to November of last year.
The live musical takes place on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. It’s also the home to such shows as The Big Bang Theory, Fuller House, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Supergirl, and more.
Original Grease cast members Barry Pearl (Doody) and Didi Conn (Frenchy) will return for Grease: Live. Check out these exclusive photos of Frenchy’s bedroom!
There are multiple crew members from Dancing With the Stars (including live television director Alex Rudzinski), one past contestant (Carlos PenaVega), one current judge and former pro dancer (Julianne Hough), and three dancers from So You Think You Can Dance.
Director Tommy Kail and production designer David Korins worked together on Hamilton the musical.
Costume designer William Ivy Long previously designed costumes for Carly Rae Jepsen and Keke Palmer in Cinderella on Broadway.
A massive tent was built outside of Rydell High School because of the high chance of rain, and the cast has been practicing outside choreography with umbrellas.
There are 392 quick changes for the principal actors. The quickest one is 11 seconds for Rizzo, Frenchy, and Jan.
Frenchy’s rufflles on her prom dress took 210 feet of fabric.
Danny and Doody each have five costume changes during the song “Magic Changes.”
The menus at the Frosty Palace are actually real. The burgers they serve, however, are not.
Each beauty school dropout headpiece has 37 silver painted and rhinestone rollers. All had to be hand sewn.
Each person in “Greased Lightnin'” starts the number wearing three sets of coveralls that rip away during the number.
The ladies’ pantie hose were exactly matched to the skin tone of each person.
